Stephens Honored by TCA and Overdrive

Henry Stephens had the honor of placing among the top 25 finalists in the 2002 Independent Contractor of the Year Contest, sponsored by the Truckload Carriers Association and Overdrive magazine.

The overall goal of the contest is to recognize and pay tribute to the independent contractors who provide reliable and safe truck transportation in moving the nation's goods.  The Operator's ability to run a successful business, operate in a safe manner over the public highways, and efforts to enhance the public image of the trucking industry are the criterion which the the drivers are judged on.

To be eligible, the Operator's general safety record and years of employment are taken into consideration along with a 500-word essay explaining why the entrant should be a candidate for the grand prize.  Careful scrutinization of the Operator's employer, credit report histories, and motor vehicle reports are performed as well.

Team Moore Places Fourth in TCA Drivers Contest

Larry and Sharon Moore were awarded fourth place in the 2002 Company Driver of the Year Contest in the team division, sponsored by the Truckload Carriers Association and Overdrive magazine.

To be eligible, the drivers' must have driven one million miles accident free, have been employed by their current trucking company employer for the past three years, and must be nominated by the motor carrier by whom they are currently employed.  Each member of the team must submit a separate complete application, along with a 500-word essay explaining they the entrant should be a candidate for the grand prize.

Sherman Accepts Humanitarian Award

Cathy Sherman was recently presented with the William Skinner Humanitarian Award for her extraordinary community service and contributions toward improving public safety.

With a degree in agricultural journalism, Cathy changed careers in 1982 when she bought her first Peterbilt. She has received 18 consecutive safe driving awards, has driven more than two million miles and is one of the first members of the Marten Million Mile club.

A five-year member of the WMCA’s President’s Safe Driver Club, she was named the Truckload Carriers Association National Independent Contractor of the Year in 1993. A member of the Wisconsin Road Team and America’s Road Team, Cathy used her own truck and personally covered much of the expense for those appearances. She has continued her crusade, speaking to civic groups about trucking and discussing the industry with media personnel. She has been responsible for numerous articles about highway safety, offering the truck driver perspective.

Cathy has been involved in numerous children’s programs, and writes to schools all over the country, visiting as many as 6 schools a year. She spends time with children with cancer, and an elderly ex-truck driver under stroke rehabilitation therapy. She participates in truck shows that donate the proceeds to "Make A Wish" foundation and is active with Muscular Dystrophy. In her spare time, she is a mentor to troubled teens.

Cathy has also made a personal crusade out of making 911 service accessible from cell phones in areas where that service is not currently available.

Cathy has an outstanding highway safety record, has been an advocate for highway safety, has made a huge difference in the way people perceive the industry and has still managed to find the time to assist a number of people less fortunate than herself.
